Hello there! So I see that you’ve decided to read more about me and my number one passion hehe.I would probably start with how I got into reading. You see, I have loved reading for as long as I can remember.
Fun fact: I had quite a different childhood compared with a lot of people my age. While everyone grew up watching Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the lot, I pretty much didn't. Yes, I’m talking about missing out on watching Hannah Montana, High School Musical… Every familiar childhood show, you name it, and I probably haven’t watched it all my life. So what exactly did I do growing up? You might have probably guessed it: reading. Yes, it might sound boring, but it’s all I’ve known my whole life.
Of course I don’t exactly remember when I first started reading, but I believe that I started getting really into it when I was 6. I would open a book, and ask my dad what every word meant. I’d practice with him to pronounce every syllable, every word.
I remember when I bought my first book of my own choice. It was written by a very renowned author: Enid Blyton. I’m sure almost everyone knows her and her reputation when it comes to children’s books and fairytales. The particular book’s title was Christina’s Kite. And ever since that, I started buying more and more of her books. In fact, I still have those books on my bookshelf, to this very day. I’ll always be thankful to Ms. Blyton for awakening my love for reading.
I loved reading so much that at one point in my life, on my 10th birthday when my parents gave me a huge Enid Blyton book along with my first thick dictionary–I even went as far as bringing the dictionary everywhere with me, where I would read it at any chance I get. When we’re out for dinner, I’d read it while waiting for our food. My parents questioned my actions, but I just simply told them that the words fascinated me. They were taken aback, yes, but nonetheless I like to think that they were a tad bit proud of me.
However, there is a sad part about my particular passion (huhu). I think it was after I got my first smartphone. I gradually stopped reading because I was always so immersed with my phone and what it had to offer. Social media apps, games, the lot. If when I was in my high school years, I could finish a whole novel in at least 2 nights tops, nowadays it could even take me months to finish just one book. Because I was always so awfully distracted. Of course I couldn’t put the blame on my phone, because the decisions were all on me. I myself would have had to decide whether or not to finish the book. It’s saddening, yes, but I’m currently trying to get back on track.
I miss reading. I hope someday I’ll be able to properly sit down, read a book, without getting distracted by anything my phone has to offer. I miss that feeling of immersing myself into the imaginary world of a storyline, connecting with the fictional characters, just getting lost in the book, even losing track of time.
Anyways! Enough about the sad part hahaha. Let me tell you about my favourite, favourite book of all time. The book that shook me to the core, gripped my heart and put me through all kinds of emotions. The book that has moved me so much, it was able to make me cry even in a room full of people.
The Beginning of Everything (US Version)/Severed Heads, Broken Hearts (UK Version) by Robyn Schneider.
The different titles didn’t really have a significant impact on the storyline of the book, it was just different according to the regions. Okay, so if I were to tell you about the book, it might take more than a single post, so I think I’ll pass.
Here’s what the books look like, if any of you were curious. You can google more about them if you’d like, and if you are intrigued to read them, feel free to hit me up! I have the UK version with me currently, and I’d be glad to lend it to you ;)
Another favourite book of mine is The First Time She Drowned by Kerry Kletter, and oh boy, when I tell you how much this book has moved me, in ways that no other book has. Even TBoE. This book is really something else. I also have it with me, if you ever would like to borrow it. It’s a gift from my friend, and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity that she had given me.
Here’s what the book looks like, if you’re curious:
Alright! So I think that is all I have for this section. I’m glad that I got to share about one of the most important parts of my life here. I will always hold reading, and my two favourite books, close to my heart. I honestly wouldn’t know what I would do without them. Until next time :)
